Domain expertise is the moat AI cannot replicate

11 Mar 2026

As AI tools lower the barrier to building software, the differentiator shifts entirely to domain knowledge. Anyone can generate a generic app. Very few people can identify a real, painful problem in a specific industry, describe it precisely, and build a targeted solution for a known audience.

Deep domain knowledge provides three compounding advantages:

  1. Problem identification. You see pain points others miss because you’ve lived them.
  2. Solution credibility. Your industry network trusts your product because you have a track record.
  3. Distribution head start. You already know the people who have the problem.

In construction, estimating, and shopfitting — where most software is built by people who have never set foot on a site — insider knowledge is not a small advantage. It is an enormous one.

The risk is spending years building skills AI will absorb, while neglecting the domain expertise AI cannot replicate. The correct bet is to deepen the domain knowledge, and let AI tools amplify its reach.
